Best Things to Do in Las Vegas: On the Strip and Beyond It

On a three-night trip: one show, one elevated view, one desert day trip, and the rest of the Strip on foot. On four nights or more, add a second desert day — Red Rock Canyon or Valley of Fire — because they are short, cheap and completely different from the canyon trips.

If you book exactly one paid thing in Las Vegas, make it the day trip. It is the item that turns the trip into something other than a hotel corridor.

Grand Canyon West is roughly two and a half hours each way and is where the Skywalk is. It is tribal land managed by the Hualapai Tribe, not part of Grand Canyon National Park, and it works as a long day from Las Vegas.

Grand Canyon South Rim is the national park and the view most people picture, but it is around four and a half to five hours each way by road. As a bus day trip it is a very long day with a short amount of canyon in the middle. It is a better fit for an air tour or an overnight.

Hoover Dam is the shortest of the three at roughly 45 minutes each way, and it pairs naturally with Lake Mead or Boulder City. Dam tour operations and access can change, so confirm current status with the Bureau of Reclamation before relying on a specific tour type.

Antelope Canyon is the furthest at around four and a half hours each way, and access is only permitted with a Navajo-authorised guide. It is spectacular and it is a whole day, so treat it as a substitute for the Grand Canyon rather than an addition.

Helicopter flights are the one way to compress the distance: a canyon landing flight delivers the landscape in a fraction of the time, at a much higher price per hour.

Shows are the strongest paid category, and the useful distinction is format rather than title: resident production shows, comedy and magic residencies, and headline concert dates behave completely differently on price and availability.

An elevated view is worth one ticket. The High Roller observation wheel and the Strat tower give you the Strip's scale, which is impossible to read at street level.

Attractions inside resorts vary wildly, and price is a poor guide. Read the review volume: in a market this saturated, an attraction with thousands of reviews and a high rating has survived a lot of scrutiny.

Skip anything that is essentially a queue for a photograph. Las Vegas has more of those than any other city we cover.

The Bellagio fountains, the Conservatory, the Venetian's interior, Fremont Street's canopy and the Strip itself after dark cost nothing and account for much of what people describe when they come home.

Walking distances are deceptive: the Strip is about four miles long and resort frontages are far bigger than they look. Plan two or three stops per evening, not eight.

Red Rock Canyon Scenic Drive is the best-value half day in the region. It requires a timed-entry reservation during the busiest months, so check the Bureau of Land Management's current rules before driving out.

Day one: arrive, walk the Strip at night, no bookings. The city is easiest to enjoy before jet lag and heat catch up with you.

Day two: the desert day trip, out early. Every canyon and dam trip is materially better in morning light and materially worse in afternoon heat.

Day three: a late start, an elevated view in the afternoon, a show in the evening. If you add a fourth day, put Red Rock Canyon or Valley of Fire in the morning slot.

Summer changes the maths. Between June and September, outdoor plans belong before 10am, and afternoon time belongs indoors.
