Key West is about 160 miles from Miami, and every mile after Key Largo is on a two-lane highway across open water. It is one of the great American drives — and it is also the reason this day trip is more demanding than the distance suggests.
A realistic day looks like this: leave before dawn, reach the island late morning, get five or six usable hours, and drive back into Miami after dark. Whether that is worth it depends almost entirely on what you want from Key West.

How you can actually reach Key West for a day

There is no passenger ferry from Miami to Key West.
Key West Express, the ferry most travellers have in mind, publishes Fort Myers Beach as its terminal — a Gulf-coast departure roughly on the opposite side of the peninsula from Miami. Its own FAQ lists year-round cruising from Fort Myers Beach only, and the previously advertised Marco Island route no longer appears in its booking interface. Planning a Miami day trip around a ferry means planning around a service that does not serve Miami.

Drive US 1 / Overseas Highway
Departs: Miami
Most flexible, and the only option that includes the bridges and the middle Keys.
- Arrival parking in Old Town: $6.00 per hour or $48.00 per day plus tax at the city garage.
- Garage height limit 7 ft 2 in and length limit 20 ft — check your rental before committing to it.
- Garage payment includes free Key West city bus travel for the whole vehicle.
- Live incident and lane-closure conditions for US 1 are published by FDOT on Florida 511.
Trade-off: A single incident on the Overseas Highway has no bypass route. Build the return around that, not around the best-case drive time.
Coach or minibus day tour
Departs: Miami
The option that removes the driving without needing a rental car.
- No parking cost or garage size limit applies to the traveller.
- Departure and return times are fixed by the operator, so island hours are set before you book.
Trade-off: No roadside stops at Bahia Honda, Islamorada or the Seven Mile Bridge overlook — the part of the drive most people remember.
Passenger ferry
Departs: Fort Myers Beach — NOT Miami
Not available as a Miami day trip.
- Key West Express publishes Fort Myers Beach as its terminal, with year-round cruising from that location.
- Round-trip adult full fare $194.00; 8-day advance fares $170.00 midweek and $180.00 Friday–Sunday.
- Change or cancellation fees run $25.00 to $60.00 per person depending on timing.
Trade-off: Reaching the terminal from Miami is itself a cross-peninsula drive, which is why this is a Gulf-coast option and not a Miami one.
Public transit within the Keys
Departs: Marathon and the Lower Keys
Useful once you are in the Keys; not a Miami day-trip route.
- Key West Transit runs the Lower Keys Shuttle daily between Key West (MM 0) and Marathon, with published northbound departures from around 5:40 AM to 7:51 PM.
- The free travel granted by the Old Town garage does not apply to the Lower Keys Shuttle.
Trade-off: The shuttle covers MM 0 to Marathon only. There is no scheduled public route continuing to Miami.

Hurricane season changes the answer
The Florida Keys evacuate early. Monroe County Emergency Management issues Keys evacuation orders ahead of the rest of South Florida because US 1 is the only road out, and the city garage closes during evacuations. In hurricane season a day trip is the first plan to abandon, not the last.

The math of the day
The drive is typically three and a half to four hours each way without delays, and delays are common: single-lane sections, bridge works, slow traffic behind trucks and the general absence of overtaking opportunities.
A 6am departure from Miami puts you in Key West around 10am. Leaving the island at 4pm gets you back for a late dinner. That is six hours on the ground and eight in transit.
Six hours is enough for one focused version of Key West: the historic old town on foot, one museum or attraction, lunch, and Mallory Square. It is not enough for a boat trip, a beach afternoon and the sunset celebration.
If your priority is the sunset at Mallory Square, the day changes shape entirely — you will be driving the Overseas Highway in the dark and arriving in Miami close to midnight.

Driving yourself vs taking a coach tour
Driving gives you the highway. Stopping at Bahia Honda, Islamorada, the Seven Mile Bridge overlook or a roadside stone crab shack is genuinely most of the pleasure of the Keys, and a coach will not do it.
It also means you, personally, drive eight hours after a pre-dawn start. That is the whole argument against.
Coach day trips from Miami exist because the driving is the hard part. They handle the early start, the return, and often bundle an activity — a hop-on-hop-off pass, a catamaran cruise or a snorkeling stop. The trade is a fixed schedule and no roadside stops.

Who should drive: two or more adults who can share the wheel, and anyone who wants the bridges and beaches as much as the town. Who should book a tour: solo travelers, anyone without a rental car, and anyone who would rather sleep than drive at 6am.
What to prioritize in one day
Key West's old town is compact and walkable, and walking it is the single best use of your hours: Duval Street's length, the side streets of Conch houses, the waterfront at the Historic Seaport.
Pick exactly one paid attraction. The Hemingway Home, the Truman Little White House, the Key West Lighthouse and the Shipwreck Museum are all under an hour each and all better than a rushed two.
The Southernmost Point buoy has a queue that is longer than the photograph deserves; go early or skip it.
Fort Zachary Taylor is the best beach and the best swimming, and it is a state park at the island's western tip — a good pairing with an early lunch if the weather is hot.
Water activities — reef snorkeling, sunset sails — are excellent and mostly incompatible with a day trip's timing unless the tour includes one. This is the single strongest argument for staying overnight.
When to stay overnight instead
One night changes the trip more than any other decision. You get the sunset, an evening on the island when the day-trippers have left, and a morning reef trip before driving back.
It also lets you break the drive: Islamorada or Marathon in the middle Keys make good stops, and both are far cheaper than Key West itself.

Practical notes for the drive
Fill the tank before Key Largo and again in Marathon if you are running low; fuel is limited and expensive further down.
Traffic peaks on holiday weekends and during spring break, and there is no alternative route — a single incident on the Overseas Highway can add an hour with no way around it. Check Florida 511 for current conditions before leaving.
Hurricane season, June through November, is the one weather factor that can close the highway entirely. Evacuation orders for the Keys are issued early and taken seriously; monitor National Hurricane Center advisories if a storm is in the basin.
Parking in Key West's old town is limited and metered; the municipal garage near the seaport is the least stressful option.
Bring reef-safe sunscreen, water and a hat. The Keys are hotter and more exposed than Miami, and shade in old town is patchy.
