US attraction reservation rules and booking windows

The single most consequential planning fact about a major US attraction is whether you can simply turn up. That fact sits on 59 different official pages, each phrased differently, and it changed at several national parks for 2026. This page holds all 42 rows in one place, with the booking window stated only where the managing agency actually publishes one.

23 of 42 venues never state how far ahead their calendar opens. Nothing on this page is estimated: where the window is not published, the table says so rather than repeating a figure from another publisher.

The 5 findings that matter

  1. Finding 1

Three headline national parks dropped advance reservations for 2026. Arches states plainly that timed-entry reservations will not be required; Glacier says vehicle reservations will not be required and is piloting a ticketed shuttle and limited Logan Pass parking instead; Yosemite announced it will no longer use a timed reservation system.

    Primary source
  2. Finding 2

Most privately operated attractions publish no booking window at all. They sell rolling dated tickets without stating how far ahead the calendar opens, which is why every third-party “book X days ahead” instruction for these venues is invented rather than sourced.

    Primary source
  3. Finding 3

Where a window is published, it ranges from six months to two days. The 9/11 Memorial Museum sells six months out; the Getty releases new dates daily up to six weeks ahead; Vizcaya opens two to four weeks ahead; and 70% of Acadia's Cadillac Summit Road slots are held back until two days before.

    Primary source
  4. Finding 4

Reservation and admission are usually two separate things. A Rocky Mountain timed-entry reservation is not an entrance pass, a Carlsbad Caverns reservation only picks an entry time with admission still paid on arrival, and a Muir Woods booking is for parking rather than entry.

    Primary source
  5. Finding 5

At several parks the reservation applies only inside a band of hours. Rocky Mountain requires one between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. and nothing outside it; Haleakalā only for the 3 a.m.–7 a.m. sunrise period; Acadia only for the Cadillac Summit Road, not the park.

  • Arches National Park — park entry

Moab, Utah · National Park Service

    Reservation
    Not required
No advance timed-entry reservation in 2026. The NPS trip-planning page states plainly: “In 2026, advanced timed-entry reservations will not be required at Arches.”
    When the rule applies
    All of 2026
    Booking window
    Nothing to book
    Same-day or next-day
Yes — drive-up entry, entrance fee paid at the gate
    Does a pass cover it?
An America the Beautiful pass covers entry; there is no time slot to override

Arches ran a timed-entry pilot in earlier seasons, and most third-party guides still describe it as current. It is not in force for 2026.

  • Glacier National Park — vehicle reservations

West Glacier, Montana · National Park Service

    Reservation
    Not required
“Vehicle reservations will not be required in 2026.” The park is instead piloting a ticketed-only shuttle system and three-hour limited timed parking at Logan Pass.
    When the rule applies
    All of 2026
    Booking window
    Nothing to book
    Same-day or next-day
Yes for park entry; Logan Pass parking is capped at three hours
    Does a pass cover it?
Entrance pass covers entry; the Logan Pass shuttle is separately ticketed

The change is to how Logan Pass is accessed, not a removal of all controls: the shuttle is ticket-only and Logan Pass parking is time-limited.

  • Yosemite National Park — park entry

Yosemite, California · National Park Service

    Reservation

  • Rocky Mountain National Park — Timed Entry

Estes Park, Colorado · National Park Service

    Reservation
    Required in season
Timed-entry reservation required to enter the park between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. One reservation per vehicle per day, valid for a designated two-hour arrival window.
    When the rule applies
    9 a.m.–2 p.m. daily, 22 May – 12 October 2026
    Booking window
Released month by month, not on a rolling horizon: 1 May for 22 May–30 June, then the 1st of each month for the following month
8 a.m. MDT on each release date
    Same-day or next-day
Yes — additional reservations for the next day are released daily at 7 p.m. MT; entry before 9 a.m. or after 2 p.m. needs no reservation
    Does a pass cover it?
A reservation is not an entrance pass and an entrance pass is not a reservation — inside the hours you need both

The single most-missed detail: entering before 9 a.m. or after 2 p.m. requires no reservation at all. Reservation fee is $2 on Recreation.gov.

    When the rule applies
    5 a.m.–6 p.m. daily, 22 May – 18 October 2026
    Booking window
Same monthly cadence as standard Timed Entry — 1 May, then the 1st of each month

    Same-day or next-day
Yes — next-day releases at 7 p.m. MT; the corridor is open with no reservation before 5 a.m. or after 6 p.m.
    Does a pass cover it?
Entrance pass still required in addition to the reservation

  • Haleakalā National Park — summit sunrise

Maui, Hawaii · National Park Service

    Reservation
    Required

    Booking window

    Same-day or next-day
Partial — a portion of each day's reservations is released 48 hours (2 days) in advance
    Does a pass cover it?

  • Acadia National Park — Cadillac Summit Road

Bar Harbor, Maine · National Park Service

    Reservation
    Required in season

    When the rule applies
    20 May – 25 October 2026
    Booking window
Split release: 30% of slots 90 days ahead, the remaining 70% just 2 days ahead
10 a.m. ET for both the 90-day and the 2-day release
    Same-day or next-day
No same-day sales, but the large 2-day release is the realistic route for most visitors
    Does a pass cover it?
Park entrance pass is required in addition to the vehicle reservation

Sunrise reservations carry a 90-minute entry window; daytime reservations only 30 minutes. The 70/30 split is the field most guides omit.

  • Zion National Park — Angels Landing permit

Springdale, Utah · National Park Service

    Reservation
    Required
A permit is required to hike past Scout Lookout to Angels Landing, issued only by lottery. There is no first-come-first-served option.
    When the rule applies
    Year-round
    Booking window
Seasonal lottery opens roughly two months before each three-month hiking block (e.g. 1 July for 1 Sept – 30 Nov), plus a day-before lottery
Seasonal lottery opens 8 a.m. MT on the stated date
    Same-day or next-day
No — but a separate day-before lottery runs for next-day permits
    Does a pass cover it?
Park entrance pass does not include the permit

Applying is not obtaining: the lottery is an application with a fee, and success rates in peak season are low.

  • Carlsbad Caverns National Park — cave entry

    Booking window

  • Walt Disney World theme parks

Orlando, Florida · The Walt Disney Company

    Reservation
    Required in season
Disney's own wording: “Before you visit a park, you must have valid admission and may need a theme park reservation, depending on the type of admission and the date of your visit.” A reservation is date-based, not hour-based.
    When the rule applies
Depends on ticket type and date
    Booking window
Not published by the official source
    Same-day or next-day
Depends on ticket type and remaining park capacity
    Does a pass cover it?
A ticket is not automatically a reservation — for some ticket types you need both

The reservation requirement is conditional on what you bought, which is why blanket statements in either direction are wrong.

  • San Francisco cable cars

    San Francisco, California · SFMTA

    Reservation
    Not required
There is no reservation system at all. A single-ride fare is bought before boarding at the boarding points; this is a fare, not a timed ticket.

    Year-round
    Booking window
    Nothing to book
    Same-day or next-day
Yes — the only option is to queue
    Does a pass cover it?
Transit passes apply; sightseeing passes do not create priority boarding

Included deliberately: “cable car tickets” sold as a reservable attraction are transit fares, and no product shortens the queue at Powell and Market.

Questions we get asked

Which US national parks require a reservation in 2026?
Of the parks in this data set, Rocky Mountain National Park requires timed entry between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. from 22 May to 12 October 2026, Acadia requires a vehicle reservation for the Cadillac Summit Road from 20 May to 25 October, Haleakalā requires a sunrise reservation year-round, and Muir Woods requires a parking or shuttle reservation year-round. Arches, Glacier and Yosemite have all dropped advance reservations for 2026.
Did Glacier National Park really drop vehicle reservations?
Yes. The park's own 2026 vehicle reservations page states that vehicle reservations will not be required in 2026, and that Glacier is instead piloting a ticketed-only shuttle system and three-hour limited timed parking at Logan Pass. That is a change in how Logan Pass is accessed rather than a removal of all controls.
How far ahead do reservations open?
There is no common answer, which is the point of this table. Published windows in this data set run from six months (the 9/11 Memorial Museum) through 90 days (part of Acadia's allocation), 60 days (Haleakalā), six weeks on a rolling daily release (the Getty), 30 days (Diamond Head) and two to four weeks (Vizcaya), down to two days for the bulk of Acadia's slots. Most privately operated attractions publish no window at all.
Does a national park pass replace a timed-entry reservation?
No, and the reverse is also true. At Rocky Mountain you need both an entrance pass or fee and a timed-entry reservation during the hours the rule applies. At Carlsbad Caverns the reservation only selects your entry time and admission is still paid at the visitor center. The two things are priced and issued separately almost everywhere.
Can I still visit if reservations are sold out?
Often, but by changing your timing rather than your plans. Rocky Mountain requires nothing before 9 a.m. or after 2 p.m., Haleakalā requires nothing outside the sunrise window, and Acadia's rule applies only to the Cadillac Summit Road. Several systems also hold back inventory: Rocky Mountain releases next-day reservations at 7 p.m. MT, Haleakalā releases a portion 48 hours ahead, and Acadia holds 70% of slots until two days before.
Is a multi-attraction pass a way around a time slot?
No. Where a venue is included in a pass, the pass covers admission and you still book a time slot. Passes do not create additional capacity, and at venues run by a sole authorised concessioner — the Alcatraz and Statue of Liberty ferries — no pass substitutes for the operator's own ticket.

Methodology and scope

Published so that anyone citing this data set can state its limits accurately.

What counts as a source
Only the body that sets the rule: the National Park Service page for that park, Recreation.gov, the state or city agency that runs the site, the federal agency that owns it, or the venue's own official page. Where access is controlled by a single authorised concessioner — the Alcatraz and Statue of Liberty ferries, Muir Woods parking — that operator's official page is treated as primary, because no one else can sell entry. No aggregators, no guidebooks, no reseller pages.
Why some booking windows say “not published”
Because they are not published. Many venues sell dated tickets on a rolling calendar without ever stating how far ahead that calendar extends. We do not convert an observed calendar into a rule, and we do not repeat a day-count from another publisher. A blank here is a finding about the venue's transparency, and it is the field most often filled in elsewhere with a guess.
Required, seasonal, recommended, not required
“Required” means you cannot enter without holding it. “Required in season” means the rule bites inside a stated season or band of hours and not outside it. “Recommended” means the agency advises booking but walk-up entry genuinely exists — the Washington Monument and the US Capitol are the clear cases. “Not required” means no advance reservation of any kind. We use the agency's own framing, and flag it in the notes where the agency's own pages disagree with each other, as at Carlsbad Caverns and the Frick.
What this data set does not cover
It covers advance-reservation and timed-entry rules only. It is not a price list, not a ranking, and not a guide to whether an attraction is worth visiting. Backcountry and wilderness permits are out of scope except where the permit is the only way to do a named marquee hike, as at Angels Landing and Half Dome. Commercial tour availability is out of scope entirely.
Volatility and correction
Reservation systems change between seasons, and several changed for 2026. Each row carries the date we last read its cited source. We re-verify monthly and correct immediately on any announced change, dating the correction. If you find a row that has changed, tell us: a correction is more useful to us than the appearance of stability.
Independence
America Experiences earns commission on tours booked through our destination pages. This page carries no booking links, no affiliate links and no product recommendations, and no operator has any input into what it says. Rows that reduce the appeal of a bookable tour — that Griffith Observatory is free to walk into, that a Pearl Harbor programme ticket costs $1, that no product shortens the cable car queue — are included for exactly that reason.
