Best Boat Tours in Miami: Cruise, Speedboat or Private Charter

Two people on a budget: take a shared Biscayne Bay sightseeing cruise. Around 80 minutes, narrated, celebrity-homes route, and the lowest price on the water.

Four to eight people together: price a private boat charter. Two hours with your own captain, your own music and a stop at a sandbar, and per-person cost that often undercuts the shared cruises.

Short on time: a 45-minute speedboat run gives you the skyline and the wake without half a morning.

Shared cruises carry dozens of passengers on a double-deck boat with a live or recorded narration. You get the full mansion-and-skyline route, a fixed schedule and no say in anything — which is fine, because the route is the reason you booked.

Private charters are priced per boat, not per person, and typically take six to twelve. Divide the listing price by your group and compare it with the shared price before deciding: at six people the two options are usually within a few dollars of each other, and the private boat gives you a swim stop and a sandbar.

Private boats also let you choose the hour. The shared fleet runs on a timetable built around midday demand; the best light on Biscayne Bay is in the two hours before sunset.

Every bay route shows you the downtown and Brickell skyline, the Port of Miami cruise berths, the Venetian and MacArthur causeways, and the waterfront houses on Star, Palm and Hibiscus Islands. Guides name the owners; the names change more often than the commentary does.

What a bay cruise does not show you is open ocean, reefs or wildlife. Biscayne Bay is shallow, sheltered and urban. Snorkelling, reef trips and dolphin sightings belong to boats that leave the bay, and those run from Key Biscayne and the Keys rather than from downtown.

The Everglades airboat rides sold in Miami are a different product on different water, an hour inland. They are not boat tours of Miami in any sense that matters to your itinerary.

From June to September, thunderstorms build over the mainland in the afternoon and roll east. Morning departures are far more reliable, and operators will cancel or turn back for lightning.

Winter is the dependable season: dry, clear and breezy. The same breeze makes the bay choppier and the ocean runs bumpier, which matters if anyone in your group is prone to seasickness.

Sunset departures are the best light and the first to sell out, especially on private boats where there is only one such slot a day.

Most downtown boats leave from Bayside Marketplace or the Miamarina area; private charters more often leave from Miami Beach or Coconut Grove marinas. Check the departure point before you book a hotel-side taxi — they are not close to each other.
